Title: Errors and Misconduct in Biomedical Research Images
Abstract: Science builds upon science. Yet, even peer-reviewed papers may contain problematic images or data. When such issues go uncorrected, researchers can waste time and resources trying to reproduce flawed results. Elisabeth Bik is an image forensics specialist who investigates biomedical publications for image errors and data concerns. In a systematic review of 20,000 papers across 40 journals, she found that about 4% contained inappropriately duplicated images. In this talk, she will present examples of problematic images and other forms of research misconduct. She will also discuss how artificial intelligence can both help detect misconduct and facilitate fabrication, as well as the growing impact of scientific paper mills.
